StartWrite is a stand-alone, complete product. It is NOT a collection of fonts to be used with another program. It is intended for use by teachers or parents for creating practice papers. Children do practice writing on paper, not on the computer. The program is solid and well-designed, and StartWrite's customer support is excellent.

StartWrite Handwriting Software
We highly recommend StartWrite!

We like StartWrite's flexibility and ease of use. After typing the words or sentences, the user simply scrolls or clicks buttons to adjust the text size, style, width, and lines. Papers can be prepared for preschool children, grade-school children, teens, or adults. There is no need to buy handwriting practice books with StartWrite on your computer! See our screenshot notes and comments.

Use StartWrite with
Draw Write Now

Draw Write Now, Drawing"It isn't hard to show children how to form letters. The challenge comes with motivating them to practice carefully."

— Marie Hablitzel, coauthor, Draw Write Now

Startwrite software works nicely with the Draw Write Now lessons. When we put the books together, we had to choose one handwriting style and use one size throughout the series. With StartWrite, the practice sentences shown in the books can used to create practice pages in any handwriting style.

Customize Handwriting Practice

StartWrite sampleIntegrate handwriting practice into your curriculum or daily routine. Create practice papers on topics that relate to children's lives and interests — the child's name, a field trip to the zoo, or one of their drawings. Combine handwriting practice with the memorization of a weekly quote or verse. Add images to the practice papers. The program comes with nice clip art, or you can add your own art — .jpg or .gif images are easily imported.

Rachel's
writing practice paper
was created using StartWrite.
We focused on changing the
way she was making
several letters.

"Some of the children write with ease, but make one or two letters incorrectly. With StartWrite I can create a paper that focuses on the letters they are making incorrectly. If a child is having problems making the letter 'd', I print out a paper with sentences that include phrases like 'a good dog', so that the child gets practice with the letters a, g, and d."
— Kim Stitzer, coauthor, Draw Write Now

"I use StartWrite when I give Draw Write Now lessons. I'm currently teaching a multi-age homeschool group (ages 5 to 10) and create practice sheets before class. The features of the program allow me to focus on each child's needs in the following ways: 1.) The youngest children learn to write their name and simple words, while older children practice writing short paragraphs, 2.) Children who use the Italic handwriting style get a paper in Italic Cursive, while children who use D'Nealian have their own papers printed in D'Nealian, 3.) Children with developing fine-motor skills get papers with sentences to trace, while children who are moving from printing to cursive are given papers with directional arrows. StartWrite gives me the freedom to 'float' around the room and work with each child."
