StartWrite is easy to use! The program begins as a blank document with a tool bar. (Refer to the image, below.)
- Click the 'T' (Text) button in the tool bar to create a text block (or many text boxes, as in this example). The text block may be moved anywhere on the document. If you are using a cursive or linked style, the letters will automatically join.
- Click the Apple (Art) button in the tool bar to include clip art (a file of nice images is provided) or use images from your own files (.jpg and .giff).

Working with one text box at a time, customize the page using the seven options on the tool bar:
- Choose a style -- Choose from a variety of manuscript and cursive handwriting styles (see samples), images of coins, clocks, and counting sets. (Spanish and math fonts are available in Windows, v 5. They are not available in Mac v.5.)
- Adjust Letter Size -- Adjust from the tiniest script to poster-size letters (9 to 192 pt).
- Light Gray or Black? -- Useful for the child who needs to trace.
- Guidelines -- Add or delete each guideline.
- Dashed or Solid? -- Useful for the child who needs to trace.
- Directional Arrows -- See the word 'Modern' in the sample.
- Red Starting Point -- Again, see the word 'Modern' in the sample.
